The images of his work evoke dark and overwhelming environments. Early in this period, his work was inspired by cityscapes, Mediterranean cities, but gradually, the painter's attention shifted to studies of objects, crammed quarters, sometimes inhabited by mannequins. De Chirico is considered one of the greatest influences of the surrealist movement.
